People who take your pain seriously — because they've spent careers learning how.

CPMC Care was founded in 2006 in Thousand Oaks. The team has grown, the technology has changed, and the approach has evolved — but the reason this practice exists has stayed the same: to give patients in this community real options beyond waiting and living with it.

Meet Dr. James Lin

James Lin, MD · Board-Certified Pain Medicine & Anesthesiology

A deeper understanding of pain. A clearer path back to life.

Dr. James Lin’s approach to pain medicine began long before he became a physician. Growing up in the western suburbs of Chicago in a family that valued education, curiosity, and precision, he developed an early interest in how the human body works. He went on to study at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he was named to the Dean’s List, and later earned a Master of Science in Neuroscience from Northwestern University, conducting research focused on how the brain processes pain signals.

That foundation continues to shape the way he sees pain today. Pain is more than a symptom to be treated—it is a signal to be understood. Before deciding how to treat pain, Dr. Lin focuses on identifying where it is coming from, what may be driving it, and how it is affecting the person behind the diagnosis.

He completed medical school at Rosalind Franklin University, followed by anesthesiology residency at Rush University Medical Center and fellowship training in pain medicine at UCLA. In 2006, he founded CPMC with a straightforward belief: patients in Ventura County deserve access to thoughtful, advanced pain care without having to leave their community.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lin has embraced emerging approaches in pain medicine when they can meaningfully improve patient care. He was among the early practitioners in the region to offer basivertebral nerve ablation using the ViaVerte system for vertebrogenic low back pain. His philosophy, however, has remained consistent: understand the source of pain, choose the most appropriate and least-invasive treatment when possible, and build a plan that fits the patient’s life.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Lin is most at home outdoors. He plays tennis and basketball, cycles local trails, hikes with friends, and travels with his children—not simply to see new places, but to experience the world with curiosity and movement.

For Dr. Lin, those things are not separate from medicine. They are a reminder of what good health makes possible.

Pain treatment is not the destination. Getting back to the life you want is.

That belief is at the heart of CPMC.

Physician Assistant

Beth Brown, PA-C

MS, Physician Assistant Practice · Pain Medicine & Rehabilitation

Clear explanations. Thoughtful care. A commitment to helping patients move forward.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Beth Brown brings a Midwestern sense of honesty, warmth, and straightforwardness to her work in pain medicine. She has practiced pain medicine and rehabilitation for more than 15 years, including many years working alongside Dr. Lin at CPMC.

For Beth, meaningful care begins with listening. She takes the time to understand each patient’s concerns, explain treatment options clearly, and create a plan that feels manageable and appropriate for the individual. Her approach is grounded in the belief that patients should feel informed, respected, and involved in every step of their care.

Her clinical practice includes interventional pain procedures such as ultrasound-guided joint injections, trigger point injections, and nerve blocks, as well as comprehensive care for acute and chronic pain conditions. She has a particular interest in patient education—helping people understand not only what treatment is being recommended, but why it may help and what they can do between visits to support their progress.

Beth earned her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Practice from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Saint Louis University. Her background in psychology continues to influence the way she communicates with patients. She understands that pain affects more than the body; it can influence confidence, daily routines, relationships, and a person’s sense of independence. Clear communication and compassionate guidance are therefore central to her approach.

Outside the clinic, Beth is an avid runner and outdoor enthusiast who feels fortunate to call Southern California home. Running has been a lifelong passion and an important part of her own lifestyle, giving her a personal appreciation for the value of movement, staying active, and finding balance. She enjoys exploring the beaches and mountains with her husband and son, spending time outdoors, and creating meaningful family memories.

Beth’s Christian faith and family are central to her life. She especially values Sundays as a time for worship, reflection, and connection with those she loves. She believes that cultivating a meaningful life beyond medicine helps her bring greater compassion, energy, and perspective to her work.

After more than 15 years in pain medicine and rehabilitation, Beth continues to find deep fulfillment in helping patients improve their function, regain confidence, and return to the activities and experiences that matter most to them.

For Beth, pain care is not only about addressing symptoms. It is about helping each patient move toward a more active, meaningful, and fulfilling life.

The first appointment is a conversation.

You'll have time to explain what's been going on, what you've tried, and what you're hoping for. We'll tell you honestly what we think is causing the pain, what options exist, and what we'd recommend — and why. No pressure to proceed with anything on the first visit.
